Cloth that is meant to be given

शादी, त्योहार और हर शुभ अवसर की भेंट

In our families, almost nothing is marked without cloth changing hands. A saree for shagun, a dohar for a new household, towels for a naming ceremony, a bedsheet set carried to a griha pravesh. Weddings are the largest of these occasions, not the only one.

So this part of the shop is arranged around giving rather than around a season. The same shelves serve a wedding in November, Diwali the month before it, a Rakhi in August and a farewell at an office — and we will tell you honestly which piece suits which hand.

Occasions we are asked for

Different occasions want different things, and the difference is not really about price.

Buying for a whole wedding

Full trousseau buying is a real part of the business, not a courtesy we extend. Families arrive with a list — so many sarees for the bride's side, so many for the groom's, a set each for the relatives coming from out of town — and we work through it in one or two sittings.

We keep a written record of what has been taken and for whom, because the mistake in wedding buying is never the choosing. It is remembering three weeks later which aunt has already been given the maroon one.

Where a piece has to be matched across many sets, or ordered in, we say so at the sitting rather than at the end. And if a count changes because more guests are coming, come back — matching later from the same lot is usually possible if the wedding is still weeks away.

Choosing a gift that gets used

The gifts that get put away in a cupboard are almost always the ones chosen for how they look on the counter. The ones that get used are chosen for the house they are going to.

Wedding season, and coming in early

The weeks around the main muhurat dates are the busiest of our year, and the shop is full in the evenings. If you can come on a weekday morning during that stretch, you will get the counter to yourself and a great deal more patience from us.

Two to three weeks before the function is comfortable for a full trousseau. Anything needing stitching, shade-matching across many pieces, or ordering in wants longer than that.

If the buying is large enough that carrying it home in one trip is a problem, tell us — and if you would rather look at furnishing for the new house at the same time, that can be done on a home visit instead of at the counter.

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked

Do you pack and wrap the gift?

Yes, on request. Tell us it is a gift and we wrap and pack it here before you carry it away, so it does not have to be done again at home.

Can you help with a full wedding — everything at once?

Yes. Trousseau and full-wedding buying is a real part of what we do. Families come with a list of relatives and occasions and we work through it in one or two sittings, keeping a written record so nothing is repeated or forgotten.

Is this only for weddings?

No. The same shelves serve Diwali, Rakhi, Bhai Dooj, Navratri and Ganesh Utsav, griha pravesh and naming ceremonies, birthdays, retirements and farewells — any occasion where cloth is given.

How far in advance should we come during wedding season?

For a full trousseau, two to three weeks before the function is comfortable. Anything that needs stitching, matching across many pieces, or ordering in takes longer, and the weeks around the main muhurat dates are the busiest of the year.

Can we exchange a gift that did not suit?

Talk to us. We would rather sort it out than have a gift sit unused — bring it in unused with the bill and we will see what can be done.
