Choosing a mattress: what the four foams actually do

Almost every mattress sold today is one of four foams, or a combination of them over a support layer. The differences are real and worth understanding.

• Memory foam softens with body heat and moulds to your shape, which spreads weight and relieves pressure on hips and shoulders. The trade-off is heat — it holds warmth, which matters in a Khargone summer — and it is slow to spring back, so turning over feels heavier.
• Gel-infused foam is memory foam with cooling gel through it. It contours much the same way but runs noticeably cooler. If you like memory foam but sleep hot, this is the version to look at.
• Latex foam is springier. It supports without the sinking feeling, responds instantly when you move, and outlasts the other foams by a wide margin. It is also the heaviest and the most expensive.
• High-resilience (HR) foam is firm, supportive and hard-wearing, without contouring much at all. It is the sensible choice for a firm sleeper, for a spare room, and for institutional use where mattresses take heavy wear.

Density, and why it matters more than thickness

Density is the weight of foam packed into a cubic metre, and it is the single number that best predicts how long a mattress will last and how much support it gives. A thick mattress in a low density will sag long before a thinner one in a high density.

Broadly: lower densities suit light body weights, spare rooms and occasional use; middle densities cover most adults in regular daily use; higher densities suit heavier body weights and beds that get used hard, including hostels and hotels. A firm feel comes from density and grade together, not from thickness alone.

Sizes, warranty and getting it home

Branded mattresses come in the standard Indian bed sizes — single, double, queen and king — in the common thicknesses. For a diwan, a wooden palang, a carpenter-made cot or any bed that is not a standard size, foam is cut to the measurement you bring in.

Bedsheets, dohars and comforters

Sheets are bought by bed size, and the practical advice is to check the mattress before you buy rather than assume: with a protector and a thicker mattress, a sheet cut for a standard depth will not stay tucked.

For this climate the dohar does most of the work — layered cotton, light enough for a fan-cooled night and warm enough for most of the winter. Comforters are worth it only for the genuinely cold weeks. Blankets we keep in both light and heavy weights.

Towels, napkins and cotton filling

Towels include Welspun alongside other mills, in bath and hand sizes. A heavier towel absorbs more and lasts longer through repeated washing; a lighter one dries faster in the monsoon.

Napkins are sold singly and in bulk for hotels and restaurants. And for the traditional cotton bed, we sell raw cotton by weight — for filling a new gadda or refilling one that has gone flat, which is usually far cheaper than replacing it.
