How the home visit works

You call or message; we come at a time that suits you; we measure every window and note which way each one faces and what the light does through the day. There is no charge and no obligation.

Then you choose — at home, against your own walls and furniture, which is the only place a curtain fabric can honestly be judged. Stitching happens here, and we come back to fit, including the track or rod.

Choosing curtain fabric for the room

The useful question is not which fabric is nicest but what the window needs to do.

• Bedrooms — heavy or lined fabric to block morning light and keep heat out. West-facing bedrooms in particular take the full afternoon sun here.
• Living rooms — often two layers: a sheer for daytime privacy without losing light, and a heavier curtain drawn in the evening.
• Kitchens and bathrooms — lighter, washable fabric, or a blind, which handles damp and grease better than cloth.
• Colour — fabric always reads darker over a full drop than it does as a swatch, and stronger in a small room. Judge it at the window, held up, not flat on a counter.

Blinds: which type suits which window

A blind is the better answer wherever a curtain would be in the way — a kitchen window over a counter, a bathroom, a narrow stairwell, a shop front, an office. We keep five types and fit all of them.

• Roller blinds — one flat panel that rolls up on a tube. The simplest and cheapest, and the easiest to wipe clean, which makes it the usual choice for kitchens.
• Zebra blinds — alternating sheer and opaque bands that slide over each other, so you can dim a room by degrees without shutting it. The most popular of the five in new houses.
• Vertical blinds — hanging slats that rotate, made for wide windows and sliding doors and for angling light away from a screen. The standard fit for offices and shops.
• Wooden and venetian blinds — horizontal slats, warmer-looking than fabric and good in studies and bedrooms where the light needs to be aimed rather than blocked.
• Roman blinds — soft fabric that folds into pleats as it rises, so it reads as a curtain rather than a mechanism. The choice when a blind has to sit in a formal room.

Blinds are measured at your home along with the curtains and installed by us. If you would rather arrange your own fitting, we will supply the blind cut to your measurement — but send the measurement of the window recess, not of the old blind.

The furnishing fabrics we keep

Most customers choose by look, and that is fine, but the name on the roll tells you how it will behave after two years at a window.

• Boucle — looped, nubbly yarn with real texture. Heavy enough to hang well as a curtain and hard-wearing enough for sofa upholstery, which is why it is the fabric we most often use for both in the same room.
• Linen — the fabric that drapes best and the one that looks most expensive at a window. Creases, and is meant to; if crisp is what you want, linen is the wrong choice.
• Jacquard — the pattern is woven in rather than printed on, so it does not fade off the surface. The formal option for a drawing room.
• Sheer and net — daytime privacy without losing the light, usually hung behind a heavier curtain.
• Printed cotton — the practical everyday choice, washable at home and the cheapest to replace when a room changes.

Mosquito nets, ready and stitched to your bed

Ready mosquito nets are stocked in the standard single, double and queen bed sizes, in the fine mesh that keeps mosquitoes out without stopping the air — which matters through the monsoon here, when the fan has to work through the net.

For a bed that is not a standard size — a diwan, a carpenter-made palang, a cot with a canopy frame, or a bed pushed into an alcove — nets are stitched to your measurement. Bring the length, the width and the height you want the net to hang to, measured from the mattress top.

Measuring, and why we would rather do it

Curtains are almost always ordered too narrow. A curtain that just spans the window hangs flat and looks like a sheet; a proper curtain uses roughly twice the track width in fabric so it still has folds when closed.

Drop matters as much. To the sill, below the sill, or to the floor are three different looks, and the choice depends on what is under the window — a radiator, a bed, a sofa. Floor-length needs a centimetre of clearance so the hem does not drag.

These are the two places a self-measured order goes wrong, and the fabric is already cut by the time anyone notices. The visit is free precisely because it is cheaper for everyone than a remake.

Sofa covers, cushions, foam and wallpaper

A sofa that has gone shapeless usually needs foam, not replacing. We cut replacement sofa foam to the seat size, and re-cover in upholstery fabric chosen at your home alongside the curtains, so the room is decided as a whole.

Sofa and bed cushions are made up to match or deliberately contrast, and diwan sets come complete with bolsters and cushions.

Wallpaper prints are worth considering for one wall rather than a whole room — a feature wall behind a bed or a sofa changes a room for a fraction of what furnishing the rest of it costs.
